September 25-29
Dear Parents,
Can you believe September is almost finished?! I don’t know about you, but I feel like this first month has flown by! It has been wonderful getting to know all of your children. I feel like we have an absolutely, fantastic class!
In Language Arts, this week we are starting Unit 2 of Module 1. We are continuing to focus on finding the main idea/the gist of a story, and then looking for important details to help us answer questions. We are going to be reading Thank You, Mr. Falker, The Boy Who Loved Words, and The Incredible Book-Eating Boy. We are also going to be working on reading stamina. Students should be fairly comfortable in the routines of the stories by now, as they we are extending our work from unit 1.
In Mathematics, we will be continuing to work on multiplication and division. We will be working with the 2s, 3s, and 4s. I encourage that parents at home work with their children on practicing their multiplication and division facts as it will become expected that students know them in order to proceed with other units.

Sincerely,
Kathryn Nolting

In grade 3 we will be using Thatquiz.org this year to help students practice the skills they learn in class and to review and strengthen old skills. I have used this site in the past with great success. Students have found the website to be fun and helpful in reinforcing skills.
In order to use this website, students need an email address to have the quizzes sent to them. Once I have an email address for your child, I will be able to start sending them quizzes. In the email from the Thatquiz website, will be a link for your child to click on. All that needs to be done is for the link to be opened. It will take you directly to the website and to your child’s quiz. There is no need for usernames and passwords for this site.
Please fill in the bottom part of this form and return it to school. Please print clearly!
Thank you.

In other news:
- Wednesday, September 27th is Back to School Night. The school will be open for parents to come and meet teachers and to hear about what is happening in the classroom. I look forward to seeing you!
- A wonderful opportunity is being provided to the ASM staff and this Friday, we will be receiving training in Positive Discipline. This is to help create a consistent and fair discipline system in the school that will benefit everyone. As a result, there will be no school on Friday, September 29th.
- I am going to be using a new website this year for students to practice their math skills. The website is called Thatquiz.org. I have used it in the past with wonderful results. As students do the quizzes, they have the opportunity to earn prizes. I have shown the site to the students and they seem very excited about it. However, for this website I will need an email address for each student. Please fill out the attached form and send it back with an email address that I can send the quizzes to. Thank you.
- I will also be sending home weekly homework starting this week. You will find attached both a math sheet and a blank lined page. The two assignments are to be completed and handed in by Thursday this week. The writing topic is for students to write me a paragraph about their favourite holiday and why they like it so much.
Sincerely,
Kathryn Nolting
